Dr David Melsom

Background

Dr Melsom is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in surgery of the hand and upper limb, including microsurgery, joint replacement and trauma reconstruction. He has been in specialist practice since 2007.

He completed a Bachelor of Science in Immunology at the University of London before graduating in Medicine with Honours from the University of Bristol. His surgical training was undertaken in the United Kingdom, where he obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics), and he later lectured in anatomy at the University of Cambridge.

After moving to Queensland, Dr Melsom was Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at Ipswich General Hospital from 2008 to 2012 and obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He now consults across Brisbane and Ipswich, and operates at Wesley Private Hospital (Auchenflower) and Mater Private Hospital Springfield, with minor and day procedures at Westside Private Hospital, Taringa.

His practice combines orthopaedic and plastic surgical techniques — including flaps, soft-tissue cover and re-implantation — allowing comprehensive management of complex hand and upper limb problems.

Dr Melsom believes that good surgical care starts with clear communication: understanding what matters to each patient, explaining the condition and the realistic options — surgical and non-surgical — and supporting recovery with structured rehabilitation through hand therapy and physiotherapy.
