Preparing for your visit

Everything you need to know before your consultation — referrals, fees, and what to expect if surgery is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your referral, any scans (X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds or MRIs) and records from previous healthcare providers relevant to your condition.

Do I need a referral?

A current referral is needed to claim Medicare benefits. GP referrals are valid for 12 months; specialist referrals for 3 months. The referral also gives Dr Melsom important details of your medical history.

Will I need surgery?

Not necessarily. Your initial consultation determines whether surgery is appropriate — many conditions are managed without an operation. If surgery is recommended, scheduling and a written cost estimate follow.

Do I need imaging before my appointment?

X-rays help monitor fracture recovery, and shoulder conditions typically require an MRI scan beforehand. Your GP will usually arrange this with the referral; if not, our staff will advise you when you book.

Where is surgery performed?

Surgery is performed at Wesley Private Hospital (Auchenflower) and Mater Private Hospital (Springfield).

How long does day surgery take?

Our staff confirm your arrival time and fasting requirements 1–2 days beforehand. Day surgery typically requires approximately half a day at the hospital.

What are the risks of surgery?

All surgical procedures have risks. The specific risks and potential complications of your procedure are explained during your consultation so you can weigh the benefits against the risks before deciding.

Fees & billing

Consultations

Our reception staff can provide the cost of your initial and review consultations when you make your appointment. Fees are payable on the day by cash or credit card (American Express not accepted). With a current referral you can claim a Medicare rebate.

Surgeon's fee

Dr Melsom's fees are based on those recommended by the Australian Medical Association (AMA). You will receive rebates from Medicare and your private health fund; the difference is your gap payment. A written estimate is provided before surgery — actual costs may vary with the duration, complexity and findings in each case.

Anaesthetist & assistant fees

The anaesthetist charges a separate fee and will invoice you directly (Axxon Health 07 3214 8555; NARKOS 07 3281 9444 — out-of-pocket costs apply). Many operations also require a surgical assistant, for which there is a separate fee.

Hospital costs

Hospital charges cover theatre, accommodation and any prosthesis. These are usually covered by private health insurance. Uninsured patients can request an estimate directly from the hospital.

If surgery is recommended

Before surgery

You'll receive a written fee estimate with Medicare and health fund rebate breakdowns. Our staff confirm your admission details, arrival time and fasting requirements 1–2 days before surgery.

After surgery

You'll go home with a folder of post-operative instructions. A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled 2–3 weeks after surgery.

Rehabilitation

Where needed, you'll be referred for hand therapy or physiotherapy to support recovery of movement in your hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder.
