Elbow Trauma

Assessment and treatment of elbow fractures and dislocations, including radial head fixation or replacement where appropriate.

Elbow trauma

Elbow injuries include fractures, dislocations and associated ligament damage. Assessment considers both the damaged bone and the stability of the joint. Treatment may involve protection and guided movement, fracture fixation, ligament repair or replacement of an unreconstructable radial head.

What is the radial head?

The radial head is the upper end of the radius at the elbow. It contributes to forearm rotation and elbow stability. Fractures may occur with other injuries, so the whole elbow and forearm need assessment.

Fixation or radial head replacement?

Some fractures can be managed without surgery. Others need screws or a plate. If the radial head is too fragmented to reconstruct reliably, a radial head replacement may be considered. This replaces the damaged part with an implant; it is not a total elbow replacement.

Dr Melsom discusses treatment according to the fracture and associated injuries.

Recovery

Rehabilitation balances protection with movement because the elbow can become stiff. Risks include infection, nerve injury, stiffness, instability and implant-related problems that may require further surgery. Recovery and return to heavier activities depend on healing and the injury pattern.
